Meet Bipolar USA’s Founder

Peer Support Specialist for Bipolar Disorder and other mental health issuesDonna Owen is an inspirational speaker and writer with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field. As the founder of Bipolar USA, her mission to educate and assist in mental health awareness and support is a personal one. Donna’s own bipolar disorder diagnosis 25 years ago, made her painfully aware of the limitations of traditional support services for someone facing the same challenges.

After many obstacles in her own recovery, Donna became determined to find a way to provide true, effective support for those suffering from mental illness. Her goal in this mission: to improve recovery rates and make a difference in the lives of those living with mental health disorders.
This passion led her to become a certified peer support specialist in Texas and establish a service technique proven to effectively deal with mental health issues. As a peer support specialist, Donna founded Recovery Is Possible in Texas – a non-profit organization where she worked with individuals providing them evidenced based practice techniques in dealing with their mental health issues. Recovery Is Possible assisted community mental health centers in realigning the treatment plans of patients – taking the treatment plans from traditional medical models to person-centered models. The new model focused on encouraging recovery versus relying on the mental health system. In addition to teaching recovery system of care principles to therapists at the centers , Donna also helped the directors implement better billing practices for their facilities. Donna has since transferred these techniques to Bipolar USA, an active national community where she supplies support to those looking for help and assists clinicians looking to gain patient perspective. A believer of Christ and community, Donna currently lives in North Carolina with her husband. She has two daughters and four grandchildren.
